Privacy policy
Effective 9 October 2026
Pear is an iPhone app for exactly two people. It has no account and we run no server that holds what you share. This page explains where your things are kept, who can see them, and how they're deleted.
- No account. Pear uses the iCloud account already on your iPhone. There's no sign-up and no password.
- Your data stays in iCloud, shared only between you and your Pear. We never receive it.
- What you type is encrypted before it leaves your iPhone. With Advanced Data Protection on, only you two can read it.
- No analytics, no ads, no tracking, no third-party code in the app.
1. What Pear keeps
Everything below is made by you and your Pear, inside the app.
- Pips
- The photo, Live Photo, video or doodle, any doodle drawn on top, the caption, who sent it and when.
- Replies and reactions
- The text or emoji, and which Pip it answers.
- Moments
- The name, the date, whether it repeats every year, and when to remind you.
- Bucket List
- Each item's text, when it was ticked off, and the Pip attached as proof, if any.
- Your Pair
- Your first names as they appear on your iCloud accounts, your Pet's name, your Pair Time Zone, when you paired (which starts the free trial), and whether Pear has been unlocked.
Your Together Streak, Pet Stage and widgets are worked out on your iPhone from the above. Which Pet Stage and Accessory you show is a setting kept only on your own iPhone.
2. Where it's kept
Pear stores your Pair with Apple's iCloud (CloudKit), not on any server of ours:
- All of it lives in one private space in the iCloud account of the Pear who sent the invite, shared with the other Pear through iCloud sharing. Only the two of you can open it. It counts toward the inviting Pear's iCloud storage.
- Captions, Replies, doodles, Moment names, Bucket List text and your Pet's name are saved in CloudKit encrypted fields: they're encrypted on your iPhone before they're sent, and we can't read them. With iCloud's Advanced Data Protection turned on, the keys are only on your and your Pear's devices, so not even Apple can read them.
- Photos and videos, dates, and your first names are stored with iCloud's standard protection, which Apple encrypts in transit and on its servers.
- Each of your iPhones also keeps a full copy, so Memories open instantly, widgets work offline, and you can always export.
Apple's handling of iCloud data is covered by the Apple Privacy Policy.
3. What we receive
Nothing you make in Pear. We don't run a server that stores your content, and the app doesn't send us anything: no analytics, no advertising identifiers, no tracking, and no third-party SDKs. We never learn your Apple ID or email address.
Like every App Store developer, we can see anonymous, aggregated download and sales numbers from Apple. If you've chosen to share crash reports with app developers in your iPhone's settings, Apple passes those on too, without your identity.
4. Notifications
When your Pear sends a Pip or a Reply, iCloud tells your iPhone through Apple's push service. Your iPhone then downloads the Pip from iCloud itself and adds the picture to the notification. Moment Reminders and the evening reminder to send a Pip are scheduled on your iPhone and need no server.
Push relay. The current version of Pear doesn't use one. If a future version turns on its optional push relay to make new-Pip alerts faster, the relay would only forward the alert: it would receive your Pear's notification tokens, your first name for "New Pip from …" and an identifier for the new Pip, and nothing else. It never sees photos, captions or Replies, and it stores nothing. We'll update this policy before that ships.
5. Permissions
iOS asks before Pear can use any of these, and you can change them any time in Settings.
- Camera
- To take the Pips you send.
- Microphone
- To record sound with the videos you send.
- Photos (add only)
- To save a Pip to your Photos when you ask. Pear can add to your library but can't see it.
- Notifications
- To tell you about new Pips, Replies, Moments and your Pear leaving.
Pear doesn't use your location, contacts or health data.
6. Purchases
The one-time unlock is sold and processed by Apple through the App Store. We never see your payment details. When either of you buys it, Pear notes in your shared iCloud space that the Pair is unlocked, so both iPhones know. Restoring a purchase also goes through Apple.
7. Invite links
Your invite is an iCloud sharing link. Anyone who has it can join until your Pear does; then Pear closes it. Send it only to the person you mean.
8. Deleting your data
- A Pip you sent: delete it, and its photo or video, doodle and caption are removed from iCloud and from both iPhones. Only a small marker of who sent a Pip, and when, stays behind.
- Unpear: when either of you Unpears, your Pair becomes a Closed Pair for both of you. For 30 days you can both still look at your Memories and export them, free. After 30 days, Pear deletes the Closed Pair from both iPhones and from iCloud. The deletion happens the next time Pear opens on each iPhone (and once it's back online, if it was offline).
- Starting a new Pair from a Closed Pair deletes this iPhone's copy straight away, after offering you an export.
- Any time: deleting Pear removes the copy on that iPhone. You can also remove Pear's data from iCloud in Settings, under your name, then iCloud, then Manage Storage.
Exports and Pips you've saved to Photos are your own files. Pear never deletes those.
9. Children
Pear isn't directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect anything from them. We don't collect personal data from anyone, so there's nothing for us to delete; a parent can remove Pear's data from a child's iPhone and iCloud as described above.
10. Your rights
Because we don't hold your data, there's nothing for us to hand over, correct or erase; you can see, export and delete everything yourself, as above. If you have a question or a request, including under the GDPR or the CCPA, contact us and we'll help.
11. This website
This site is a set of static pages hosted on Cloudflare Pages. It uses no cookies, analytics or third-party scripts. Cloudflare processes standard request data, such as IP addresses, to deliver and protect the site.
12. Changes
If this policy changes, we'll update this page and the date at the top before the change takes effect.
